Greater Than the Greatest Love

Jesus says in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” We might read this verse and receive comfort, knowing that Jesus laid down His life for us. After all, Jesus says two verses later, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends…”

However, this is not the kind of love that Jesus has for us. Jesus’ love, by His own definition, is greater than the greatest love because Jesus did not die for His friends.

Romans 5:10 tells us, “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” We were the enemies of God. That is who we were and that is who Jesus died to save.

Jesus died for His enemies.

What great love Jesus has, that while we were ungodly, while we were still sinners, while we were deserving of wrath, while we were the very enemies of God, Jesus loved us and died for us. We can be reconciled to God by the death of His Son and are saved because Jesus willingly laid down His life for us.

If you do not know Christ today, cry out to Him. Know that His love for you goes deeper than the greatest love possible and that Jesus displayed His unconditional love for us on the cross of Calvary. Because of this, we can be saved and reconciled to God. Hallelujah, what a Savior! Repent and believe on Him.
