God’s Word is Eternal

We live in an ever-changing world. Political leaders rise and fall. Technology changes and advances. The people in our lives come and go. Jobs change. The stock market plummets. Inflation soars. Ideas and philosophies evolve. In a world that seems to always be changing, is there anything we can place our trust in that is constant?

The one constant in a world full of ever-shifting sands is the Word of God. It is our anchor to reality and our tether to the truth.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8

Pictured above is my Bible. From an earthly or monetary standpoint, it isn’t very significant. It is an ESV Thinline Bible that I received as a Christmas gift almost 10 years ago. However, that Bible has become my most prized possession. It has been carried in my backpack throughout middle school, high school, college, and now work. It has traveled with me on trips and rested on my nightstand as I slept. Highlighters, pens, and tears have marked it. In it, I have inscribed marriages, births, and deaths of loved ones. I have read passages of celebration on days when I felt overjoyed, and it has given me consolation on days when I walked through deep, dark valleys.

In some ways, my life has not been consistent. I have seen many changes, experienced losses, and gone down paths I never would have planned or anticipated. However, the one constant in my life is the Lord, and He reveals Himself to us through His Word. Its truth has never changed and never will.

I want to make it clear that I don’t want this to come across as boasting. That is not at all my intention in writing this. I don’t understand the Bible perfectly. I have plenty of questions about what I read. I also don’t read it with as much consistency as I should. I have gone through periods where I read daily, and other times when, sadly, I neglect my responsibility to read this greatest of all books. However, when I fail, the Lord picks me up and points me in the right direction. He shows me what obedience looks like and shows me who He is through the Bible. This is why abiding in the Word must be of utmost importance in my life, and it should be in yours as well.

I share all of this for two reasons. First of all, God’s Word sustains us. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). It is also how we know and understand the gospel! We have and share the hope of this message through God’s Word (Romans 10:17). So, we must cling to the Word.

Second, however, I would encourage you to use a physical Bible. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, and ultimately it chalks up to my personal opinion, but I feel that this is still an important distinction. While you can certainly read the Bible from a phone, tablet, or computer, there is something special about using a physical copy of God’s Word. A physical Bible doesn’t have distracting notifications pop up, and it doesn’t have a battery. Furthermore, a physical Bible that you have spent time poring over will stand as a testament of your walk with the Lord to your friends and family. One day, when you pass away, it will be a treasured heirloom that reminds them of you and gives them peace, thinking about where you are.

So, read your Bible. Study it. Travel with it. Abide in it. Treasure it. God’s Word is trusted, and it will endure into eternity. Build your life on it today.
