Reminders from VBS

‘Tis the season for Vacation Bible School! If you are reading this and you serve at your local church, chances are you have already hosted a VBS or are getting ready to later this summer. VBS is a very fun time for churches, but if you’re on the volunteer side of it, this can also be a very hectic time. This large event takes a team of adults (and even youth, in many cases) working together to organize crafts, demonstrate dance moves, lead games, and most importantly, teach Bible lessons.

Something that stands out in my mind about Vacation Bible School is the reminder it serves of the gospel. Although we feed children and want them to enjoy themselves, the goal of any VBS should be to share the good news of Jesus with children and youth. Lord willing, some (or many!) of them will respond to this message, and we then get the privilege of walking them through the process of salvation.

It is easy to overcomplicate things in the church. There are many different views on eschatology, predestination, or whatever big word Bible-related topic you want to fill in the blank with. Additionally, most churchgoers would agree (and rightly so) that we want to do things well, accurately, and in a manner that reflects God’s character and design.

However, at its core, we must not forget our goal: to share Christ. The church is called to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). This doesn’t apply only to missionaries, but we should be discipling the children and youth in our communities—and Vacation Bible School is a great way to do this!

All being said, Vacation Bible School is a great way for us to reset and remember what is most important in our faith. The gospel is a beautiful message, and part of what I believe is so beautiful about it is how it is a simple message. The world may not understand (1 Corinthians 1:18, 2 Corinthians 4:34), but once God opens our eyes to this truth, it is made clear.

John 1:12 says, “to all who did receive him, who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” Instead of overcomplicating matters, let us share this message with others. Let us tell the world—children, teenagers, and adults alike—that if they receive Jesus by believing in His name, God will give them the right to become His children. May we receive this message with childlike faith and humility and share it in a way that others can understand.

Here are some Vacation Bible School-related memes I found online. I hope you find these as humorous as I did!
